USQ News and Press Page.....

As featured recently in the below article from the Sunday World Newspaper, members of the Ulster String Quartet were on hand to add their special touch to a wonderful occasion - a proposal.

Danny, Tom and Nick provided music worthy of the stunning backdrop on Carrick-a-Rede Island on the north coast while Andrew surprised Áine and “popped the question”!

We were welcomed by Caroline Redmond from the National Trust who also helped us with our equipment on the beautiful scenic walk towards the rope bridge and across to the Island. When Andrew had approached us some weeks ago, he had an idea of where he would like us to set up and play and looking at the pictures he got it just right. Also helping us was the weather - an absolutely stunning day (which meant we didn’t have to bring the gazebo across the rope bridge - that WOULD have been tricky!).

As you can see, we had fun making the most of the opportunity to take some great pictures and created quite a buzz on our way to the Island with everyone wondering what we were doing there “suited and booted” on such a hot day!

We were told that this was not the first proposal to be made at the famous landmark - but it was the first time that a proposal was accompanied by live musicians. We feel very proud to be the first group to play there and privileged to be present at such a wonderful occasion.

Our thanks go to Caroline for making us so welcome and our congratulations to the newly engaged Andrew and Áine!

USQ Recital at Royal Belfast Golf Club...

The 21st January 2012 marked a special occasion for the Ulster String Quartet - a recital at the prestigious Royal Belfast Golf Club.

The recital took place in the magnificent Music Room and we performed some of our new material and some specially arranged quartet arrangements of some of the most beautiful songs and operatic arias with the fabulous Rebekah Coffey, fresh from her recent appearances as the Sandman in NI Opera’s production of Hansel & Gretel. Our programme included some Bach, Gershwin, Britten, Mozart, Donizetti and even some Randy Newman to name but a few! After the performance, we were very kindly invited to join the members in a sit down meal.

During the afternoon, we took the opportunity to record some of the recital programme as well as some of the most commonly requested music in our repertoire, as well as recording the recital itself. Click here to view all our current videos (including many from the afternoon and evening) on our YouTube channel.

Our thanks go to Hilary and everyone at the Royal Belfast Golf Club for their warm welcome and generous hospitality in what was an absolutely fantastic evening!http://www.youtube.com/user/ulsterquartetshapeimage_3_link_0

USQ perform live on BBC Radio Ulster’s “Sounds Classical”...

In a special Titanic themed “Sounds Classical” on  Sunday 15th April 2012, The Ulster String Quartet joined John Toal in the BBC Radio Ulster studio and performed songs and pieces that were played by the famous band of musicians, including the ones that were reportedly played as the doomed ship slowly sank beneath the waves.

Composer and cellist Neil Martin (pictured with us  above) specially arranged them for a variety of string ensembles and piano (which was beautifully played by Francis King) and we were on hand to duly pay homage to their brave and selfless actions on that fateful night.

Thank you to all who stopped to say hello at the Merchant Hotel Wedding Fayre on Sunday 9th September - Many of you have already booked our services for your special day so thank you. As you can see had a prime spot in front of the fashion show!

This was a rare treat for us as we are not regular wedding fayre exhibitors so performing our favourites from our broad repertoire - and of course being able to perform with Rebekah Coffey was great fun. It was great to meet all the other exhibitors and we’d like to say a special thank you to the staff at the Merchant Hotel for looking after our every need!

Merchant Hotel Wedding Fayre...

Last month, we took part in the Portaferry Proms at the Portaferry Presbyterian Church. As well as accompaning soloists Lynda Barrett and Jenny Bourke in a number of songs we featured Danny Seidenburg’s “Bach’s Lunch”. We then, with the help of organist Richard Campbell joined forces again in a performance of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater". All in all, a very enjoyable evening and the FPPC (Freinds of Portaferry Presbyterian Church) looked after us with their generous hospitality both before and after the concert. Above is a picture of us enjoying the post concert reception!
